But as always with the January transfer window opening, the media will begin linking more and more players to Arsenal. But seriously, there are defenders out there better than Koscielny and Squillaci who could do with a move to the Emirates.

Here are 5 defenders who would without a shadow of doubt impress:

1.Mamadou Sakho – Paris Saint Germain: The 20 year old defender has already played over 100 games for his club and battled it out with some of the leagues toughest players. At 20 the guy is good. Give him 5 years and he will be a top-notch defender.

2.Phil Jagielka – Everton: Possibly one of the most strongest defenders in the Premier League with over 400 games in England under his belt. Jagielka needs a top club to play for. After all, Everton run of poor form isn’t going to help the english man. Wenger already tried to lure him from Everton in the summer but Moyes rejected all the bids placed by the frenchman. His playing style is just like Vermaelens. If I was Wenger, I would go for him!

3. Jan Vertoghen – Ajax: At 23, Vertonghen still has a glistening future ahead of him, especially as the Belgium is regarded as one of the best young defensive prospects in Europe. Furthermore the Ajax man is blessed with great strength and speed, which the Arsenal defence currently seems to lack. The Belgium international has been a prominent figure in the Ajax backline and has been widely touted with a move to the Premier League for a while now. Vertonghen also boast a close friendship with Thomas Vermaelen, as the pair were former Ajax teammates as well as both playing regularly for Belgium. The pair boast similar styles of play, predominantly in physical terms, and are no stranger to one another. If Arsenal were able to acquire Vertonghen, a strong relationship with Vermaelen is almost certain to occur. A number of clubs are touted to by vying for the Belgium’s signature; however Vertonghen is unlikely to attract a high fee with the asking price likely to be within £10-15 million.

4. Richard Dunne – Aston Villa: He may be very old but he does have vast expirience of Premier League football. He was possibly one of the best defenders last season but this season hasn’t proved much as Aston Villa had one of the worst starts to the season. If he does sign he could be a cheap option to add expirience to the sqaud. Because of his build he could easily move strikers away! I wouldn’t mind this move happening!

5. Per Mertesacker – Werder Bremen: For me Mertesacker is one of Germanys best defenders. At only 26 and 6ft 6 not only is he young but he can score from set pieces and header out balls from set pieces! At his height he could easily tower over players as they come towards him. And as an odd goalscorer he is probably one of the best when it comes to scoring goals with the head. With Liverpool also after his signature, Wenger will have to be fast in placing an improved bid of £10 million after a £5 million bid was rejected earlier this season.

My defenders I would like to see after the end result would be:
Bacary Sagna at RB (Right-Back)
Thomas Vermaelen at CB (Centre-Back)
Per Mertesacker or Jan Vertoghen at CB (Centre-Back)
Gael Clichy at LB (Left-Back)

The Birmingham manager then said after the interview how much Hleb has to focus not and anything else apart from Birmingham. Since Hleb arrived from Barcelona he has struggled with fitness and form. The manager has stated that he wants to see more from Hleb as he has the expirience of a mentally strong player.

The much sought after Belgium winger has earned rave reviews this term, including drawing high praise from Zinedine Zidane who has urged Real Madrid to sign him.

Real seem set to lose out on Hazard though, with the flying winger speaking admirably about Arsenal and their proven track record at developing youngsters, whilst also mentioning how he turned down a move to Chelsea six months ago.

“I could have gone last June, but I was not ready to make that big leap,” he said to the Daily Mail.

“Recently the press have been writing about interest from Liverpool, and it is nice to hear your name being mentioned everywhere, especially with the best teams in the world.
“If I do leave at the end of the season, I don’t want to go somewhere where I will be on the bench. I am young, not 20 until next month, and it will be difficult to break through in a team like Real, where Ronaldo and Kaka will be my competitors. But there are teams like Arsenal, where youngsters can grow more easily into the first team and make their mark.

“I will not leave for another French club, because, with more or less 100 first division matches under my belt for Lille, I don’t think I have to prove my qualities for a team in the same league. I am feeling stronger now and better equipped for the challenge of playing at a higher level.”

The players’ club have revealed that the Premier League giants made the bid after a delegation visited them last week.

Defender Vrsaljko, 18, has been tracked by a number of Europe’s top clubs, while Kovacic, 16, has been likened to Lionel Messi.

Mamic told Sportski Zurnal: “Ten days ago we had an special visit in Zagreb.

“Here were people from Arsenal and they were ready to pay 20 million Euros (£16.9m) for Vrsaljko and Kovacic.

“But they are to stay in Dinamo, Arsenal just wanted to buy them for the future. But my answer was sharp, I said ‘no’ in one second.”
